Good news for Swiss scale-ups: More time to turn investment into profitability

Scaling a company takes time. And for many innovative businesses, particularly in deep tech, the path from breakthrough technology to sustainable profitability requires years of substantial investment.

Switzerland is taking an important step towards recognising this reality. From 1 January 2028, Swiss companies will be able to carry forward tax losses for 10 years instead of 7, applying to losses incurred from the 2020 tax period onwards.

Why does this matter for scale-ups?

  • Longer development cycles: Deep tech companies often need significant time and capital before reaching commercial maturity.
  • Better financial conditions: Extended loss carryforwards can reduce future tax burdens once companies become profitable.
  • A more competitive business environment: Tax policies that reflect the realities of scaling help strengthen Switzerland's attractiveness as a location for innovative companies.

At SwissEF, we know through our UpScaler Program that successful scaling requires more than capital. It takes strategic decisions, experienced leadership, access to markets and a business environment that supports long-term growth.

This regulatory change is a welcome step in that direction. Because if Switzerland wants to create the next generation of global market leaders, its framework conditions must support not only starting companies, but scaling them successfully.
